Start with your course
Choose your exam board, qualification and subject, then either pick a topic to practise or open an assignment from your teacher.
Attempt a few questions, check them against the mark scheme and record which ones you got right. Next time, those results show you what to come back to.
A question bank you can narrow down
Filter past-paper questions by topic, paper, keywords, marks, year, time and difficulty, or press Random for a question that matches your filters. On the Free plan you get a small number of questions each day. Basic and Premium are unlimited.
Attempt each question before opening the mark scheme, then mark it correct or incorrect. Attempts keeps your Correct and Incorrect lists so you can return to the questions you want to try again.
You mark your own work. ALN does not grade written answers, so for a partly correct answer, use the mark scheme to find what you missed and keep the detail in your own notes.
Mark schemes and model answers
Questions come with their official mark schemes, which show what earns credit. Many papers also have a model answer, which shows one way to write a full response with the working or reasoning laid out. Model answers are part of Premium.
Model-answer coverage differs by course and paper. Many courses are fully covered and some are partly covered or not yet started. The live coverage page shows exactly where you stand for your course.
Model answers pass our publication checks before they appear, but they can still contain mistakes. Compare them with the question and the mark scheme, and use Report answer if something looks wrong.
See what past papers have covered
Paper Analysis, included from Basic, shows how often each specification point has come up in the past papers ALN holds. Open a point to see the actual questions behind the figure.
Check how many papers were counted before reading too much into a percentage, because papers without reliable tags or scope information are left out. Paper Analysis also highlights weak spots and quick wins from your own saved results.
It shows what has been examined. It does not predict the next exam. Keep revising the whole specification.
Study notes (beta)
We are also building a library of study notes, with explanations, worked examples and links to related questions. The reader lets you bookmark notes, pick up where you left off and mark a note complete.
Notes is in beta. It is currently open to a limited set of courses and to accounts added during testing, and it is hidden for everyone else while we expand it.
The Plans page shows which courses have notes and whether your account has access. The numbers change as notes are written, so we do not repeat them here.
Pick up where you left off
The Dashboard brings together the questions you have attempted, your accuracy, your study streak, recent activity, performance by subject and any open Teams assignments. It also shows your plan and how much of today’s allowance is left. Premium adds your full mark history and weak spots by topic.
Use it to return to a recent mistake, continue an assignment or target a subject where your results are weaker. Your accuracy reflects the questions you chose and how you marked them.
Teams and assignments
Teachers and study-group organisers can build an assignment from the question library, add a description and a due date, and set it for a team. Learners open it from Teams or their Dashboard. Creating teams and assignments is included from Basic, and anyone can join a team for free.
Assignment progress shows who has recorded attempts, which helps a teacher decide whose written work to look at.
Everyone in a team keeps their own plan. The owner of an independent team can also buy sponsored seats that give chosen learners Premium access for one subject.
Check your course’s coverage
What is available depends on your course and the feature. Before you plan a session:
- Questions: choose your course and look at the results for the paper or topic you need.
- Model answers and Paper Analysis: check the live coverage page, then open your course or paper.
- Notes: check Plans to see which courses are in the beta and whether your account is included.
- Your access: check Plans and your Dashboard for your plan and allowances.
A few honest caveats
Questions, tags and model answers can contain errors or gaps. If something looks wrong, check it against the original material and ask your teacher about marking you are unsure of.
Time and difficulty ratings are estimates, your accuracy depends on your own marking, and Paper Analysis only describes the papers it counted. None of it replaces working through your full course specification.
